The definitive evidence intended which the firearm was so marked subsequent to its passing exams using a significant proof load—Winchester’s program of expressing the barrel or receiver satisfied the present common. Or is there more to it?
If it were being feasible to edit my earlier reply I might alter the introduction with the “Oval P” stamp to read through “not uncovered right up until 1910 or afterwards.” Therefore the 1913 day is an excellent match.
I can not decide precisely once the “Oval P” was to start with used dependant on my operate but I can make this observation. The Oval P evidence stamp is simply found on barrels which have a Design 3 barrel tackle which is situated to the remaining side on the barrel. This placement wasn't widespread right up until 1910 for the Design 1892 rifles.

I think about Winchester would of saved and maintained the barrel chamber reamers for all the various 271+ calibers which they developed. Along with a lot of barrel blanks laying all over. This can be from the 1916 brochure of your manufacturing facility’s goings-on.
I feel a manufacturing unit with three.25 million sq. toes of flooring Place experienced a good amount of home to do all that it wanted and wanted to. I doubt it could of Expense everything much to go explain to the experienced barrel shop man, hey make me up this obsolete caliber With this length and for this model rifle.
Ned Schwing said in his reference reserve about the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester began evidence marking them in 1908… I do not know if that is definitely accurate, but will believe that it's. The “WP” evidence mark was applied following the barrel and receiver had been mated, assembled and concluded. This is very evident to the firearms manufactured while in the late teenagers through early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off when the evidence was struck around the receiver frame.
